SECOND ADEQUACY REVIEW
`~ SENECA II PERMIT RENEWAL APPLICATION
C-80-005
September 15, 1986
2.04.6 Geology Description
1. Peabody Coal Company should describe the mitigative techniques
undertaken in the vicinity of core hole 2614 to, buffer the 96.9
feet of sodic overburden present. Peabody should also describe the
benefits of these techniques to the re-establishment of vegetation.
RESPONSE:
Sodic Lennox overburden at Drill Hole Site 2614E was mitigated by
"avoidance" as specified on Page 6-153 of Seneca SMP No. C-80-005. The
last pit of Lennox and Wadge coal was extracted approximately 550 feet
east of Drill Hole Site 2614E (see Exhibits 6-1, Drill Hole Location
Map, and 12-1, Operations Plan). Topsoil removal activities were
discontinued about 150 feet east of Site 2614E (see Exhibit 9-3, Topsoil
Balance Plan).
Sodic overburden may be encountered where the Lennox coal seam is
intercepted as the final highwall is reduced. Regraded spoil from the
Lennox highwall reduction area (in the immediate vicinity of Drill Hole
Site 2614E) will be sampled on a 300-foot grid and tested for sodium.
Exposed sodic strata will either be buried in the final pit or covered
with two to three feet of suitable spoil.
Pages 6-153 and 6-164 to Tab 6 of SMP No. C-80-005 were revised to
incorporate the additional spoil monitoring requirement in the Lennox
highwall reduction area near Drill Hole Site 2614E. Revised Pages 6-153
and 6-164 are attached with the response to Geology Comment 5.
2. Peabody should, based on field observations, describe the
efficiency of overburden mixing due to dragline dumping. Peabody
should provide a detailed description specifically describing how
1
