Monitoring of the shrub plantings will consist of a spring 1987
quantitative estimate of the survival and establishment of the shrubs
planted the previous fall. This will be followed by a late summer or
early fall 1981 quantitative estimate of the survival and establishment
of shrubs at that period. The results from the various plots will be
compared. Observations of the general health and vigor of the seedlings
will be noted. Furthermore, an estimate will be made of the amount of
natural shrub regeneration in the plots.
Finally, the 1,500 shrub seedlings planted in and adjacent to the study
plot constitute the shrub seedling planting efforts for the fall 1986
season (see Attachment 1). As shown on the seed mix submitted with the
response to Comment 12 of the PAR, shrub seed for the species
chokecherry, mountain big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata vaseyana) and
rubber rabbitbrush (Chrysothamnus nauseosus) has been ordered. The
quantity of seed ordered for these three shrub species is sufficient to
supplement the permanent seed mix far the anticipated 140 acres of
reclamation. The seeding rates for these species were calculated
slightly higher than normal to provide for even greater opportunities of
shrub establishment.
COMMENT:
A.4. Comment ten (10) of the PAR dealt with a PCC commitment to submit
an annual map depicting the approximate location of areas to be
planted with shrubs and aspen plantings. In reply, PCC submitted a
map, with associated text, depicting the approximate location of
the planting for years 1979-1986 (less 1980 when no plantings
occurred). The submitted map satisfies the commitment to date.
As the Uivision is aware of the inherent difficulties associated
with plantings discussed under this comment, the Division is
anxious to assess the success which PCC has experienced to date.
If data is available, it should be submitted to the Division.
RESPONSE:
PCC has not collected specific data related to the level of shrub and
40
