1'_ .~N
;);.; •
.M1~r..
`_~ `~ h~'~ Ladak. Ladak is a falcate type variety. It vse first Introduced
~`• ~~` into this country from northern India. There is ao doubt about the fact
' that Ladak is our beet variety vhen grown under drylend conditions. It
~.; i"
.a~:t~ produces n semi-prostrate plant vhich has the ability to utilize vinter
~~•"~: moietuze~ produce a heavy first cutting, then recover verq alovly thus
• protecting root reserves for the following year if dry conditions force
it into dormancy. Blossoms on the plant are mostly yellowy but they may
vary from blue to green to white.
Ladak 65. Ladak 65, 1e the result of combining 49 Ladak clones vhich
shoved resistance to alfalfa vilt. It ie very similar to Ladak and can bn
recommended for the same conditions.
Team. Team is the first variety developed vhich has any resistance
to the alfalfa veevil. The name vas derived from the fact that an enormous
team of tlSDA scientiste~ representing the entire plant science group at
Beltsville~coopetated in making thousands of selections vhich finally
resulted in this variety. In addition to it's resistance to the weevily 1t
is also resistant to the pea aphid and to the anthracnoae and leaf spot
diseases.
Prostrate ~Paeture Type)Alfalfas
• The pasture type or (rhpzometoue).alfalfae are not developed for high yields
~• Rather they are selections of the prostrate falcate type for planting with
grass pasture mixtures. They are sometimes represented to be bloat free
varieties. but this is sot true. The fact that little bloat usually results
from these mixtures results from the fact that less alfalfa as competed to .
grass ie grazed, due to the prostrate growth habit of the variety. The
fact that the alfalfa !e grazed less closely results in the alfalfa re-
maining in the pasture for a longer time. thus adding to the quality of
the grasses through nitrogen fixation. •
Rhizome! Probably the oldest of the prostrate varietiea~ it vas
developed in Canada. Higher yields have been reported from thin variety
than from others due to the fact that the prostrate •grovth characteristic
seems to become lees apparent when the variety ie planted further south.
Rambler. Another Canadian variety. developed to intensify the prostrate
growth characteristic. It is very similar to Rhizome otherwise.
I
Travois. Selected from clonal selections from Rambler by [he South
Dekote Experiment Station. It fe strongly prostrate and strongly dormant
end hardy. It vas developed for interplanting with greases in the northern
states.
~^ •
