It is probably the "etanderd'variety
~.,i Colorado at the present time. It ie a variegated variety synthesized
gcrom five different clones (crown cuttings). It hen high pield capacity
and responds well to good culture. It !e somewhat susceptible however, to
the leaf spot disease. •
Vernal: Vernal is a USDA-Wisconsin variety of complez synthesin.
Pifty percent of .the clonal parentage, however, wee from the old variety,
Cossack. Vernal ie very hardy end is resistant to both alfalfa wilt sad
to the leaf spot disease. It has high yield capacity. Growth habit in
the field is very similar to Ranger.
Lahontaa. Lahontan le included herewith beceuee of the fact that it
was our first variety which contsined zeaistence to the alfalfa aphid.
there 1e still a subetantiel acreage of the variety being grow, particu-
larly in the Atkaneee Valley.
Lahonten. a USDA-Nevada release was actually developed ae a nematode
resistant variety, but the insect resistance wan also discovered ee the •
five clone synthetic was selected. It produces a good quality hay sad the
growers like it. It ie reaietsnt to the stem nematode and to the ephid~
but highly susceptible to leaf disease.
Washoe. Waehoe is very similar to Lahonton in all characteristice~
but it has a little more capacity for yield. It renters the pee aphid
ea well ae the alfalfa aphid and etem•nematode. It ie also a wilt re-
eietant variety.
Narragansett. Phis variety resulted from a complex synthesis of
~~native (common), falceta~ and Canadian variegated clones. It became prominent
' when it proved to be the only variety to survive after a 1944 tornado re-
sulted in the entire alfalfa teat being submerged in sea water for a long
period of time. Seed of this variety was produced under the certification
program for Hew York state during the I950'e. There ie still a smell
acreage of the variety in Colorado.
Atra. Atra is a selection from Vernal which originated in California.
Like Vernal it is herdy~ resistant to leaf spot and wilt resistant.
Dawson. Dawson ie a Nebraska variety. It ie a synthetic. developed
from eight clones each of which vas selected for resistance to aphids.
+ Davaon ie resistant to both the alfalfa aphid and to the pea aphid. It
has excellent yield capacity and it's hardiness is about the same ae ~
Ranger.
Cody. Cody ie a Kansas variety selected from 22 parent clones of
Kansas Common (similar to Buffalo). It is a purple flowered variety
similar to Buffalo in all characteristics except that it is resistant to
the alfalfa aphid. Aardineee ie only moderate, eo it fe recommended only
in the southern portion of the state.
Ranza. Ranza has the same general background ae Cody, but ft has
been selected for greeter yield capacity, It la doubtful that you can
tell it from Cody in the field.
