• SLA9861
This isolated find is a single grey felsite secondary flake. The find was located on the north rim of a
small ephemeral drainage on the west side of Little Jeff Canyon. Isolated finds are considered not
eligible for the Register.
Re-evaluated Sites
SLA7194
This site is located on the terrace along Lorencito Can}~on Creek south of its confluence with Purgatoire
River. The site was originally recorded with a light scatter ofartifacts on a small portion of the terrace
along the east cut bank of Lorencito Canyon Creek. Features were observed in the cut bank at
different depths below surface (McKibben et al. 1997). The present survey included portions of this
terrace and additional artifacts were found. The artifacts were scattered on the terrace expanding the
original boundaries to include all of the terrace area. The artifacts included two projectile points,
probably a Late Prehistoric style, and four pieces ofceramic. The ceramic pieces are a plainware with
micaceous temper dating to approximately the mid-1500s and could be associated with the Jicarilla
Apache, Sangre de Cristo (Cassells 1997; Stone 1999). The features originally noted were not
observed in this recording. However, there has been recent erosional activity along that cut bank and
the features may have been removed as aresult. Charcoal, in concenVations and diffuse scatters, is still
. visible in the cut bank. It is likely that other features exist. The presence of diagnostic artifacts, the
variety of the artifact assemblage, and the likelihood ofintact buried features, suggest that this site can
contribute to our knowledge of the prehistory of the area. The buried features had been observed at
different levels and it is possible that the area has multiple occupations. The site can inform us on the
type and timing of occupations in the area and the activities engaged in., The data from the potential
features and artifact assemblage can be used to address questions relating to chronology, technology,
population movement,andsettlementandsubsistencestrategies. The site isconsideredeligibleforthe
Register. Avoidance of the site is recommended.
SLA9571
This site was revisitedinpreparationforNativeAmericanvisits. During the site visitascatterofgrey
felsite flakes, a mano, and a quartz manuport were noted. The artifacts aze found near the possible
eagle trap and continue eastward towazds the road. The artifacts are lightly scattered in an area of
approximately 70 x 30 m. There were two recently dug holes near the stone feature. It is not clear
whether these aze a result of human activity or perhaps from a bear. The artifact assemblage does not
include any diagnostic artifacts and these is little likelihood of buried cultural remains. The artifacts were
observed in this visit probably due tti the change in vegetation and recent rains. The first visit was in the
spring and the vegetation has died back since that time with current conditions excellent in terms of
surface visibility. TheeagletrapmayretainspiritualorculturalsignificancefortheNativeAmericans
who formerly occupied the area. This site has a rather meager artifact inventory and is not likely to
yield sufficient important information to be considered significant under Criterion d. However, this site
• LorencitoSVYandTestingCulRpt-RPT(475)Aug0l.wpd 4
