• Diagnostic artifacts aze collected and all other artifacts are returned to the test pit when backfil led. Soi]
type, color, and consistency are recorded and when possible, profiles are drawn to aid in depositional
discussions.
RESULTS
The pedestrian survey was a total of 100 acres. The cultural resource inventory resulted in the
recording of three new isolated finds and inthe re-evaluation ofone site. Two additional sites were re-
evaluatedasaresultofvisitationto preparefortheupcomingNativeAmericanconsultationvisits. The
two sites visited in preparation forthe consultation were found to contain a scatter of lithic artifacts in
addition to the possibleeagletraps. These sites remain unevaluated as to theireligibility for the Register
until the consultation is completed. The other re-evaluated site is the previously recorded site,
SLA7194. This site was originally recorded as containing buried features evidenced in the cut bank of
Lorencito Canyon Creek. The recent survey revealed additional artifacts on the surface which
expanded the site boundary. These artifactsincludeddiagnosticartifacts;twoprojectilepointsandfour
ceramic sherds. Thissiteisrecommendedaseligiblefor[heRegis[er. The isolatedfindsareprehistoric
artifacts and considered not eligible for the Register. Each ofthe sites and isolated finds are described
below.
The testing was conducted at site SLA9562 and site SLA9570. Testing was completed by hand
• excavation using a shovel. The test pits were approximately 40 cm square and excavated to a sterile
layer. The fill was screened through'/<-inch mesh screen. Site SLA9562 had five test pits and one
profile; all indicated no buried cultural deposits. As a consequence, this site is recommended as not
eligible for the Register. Site5LA9570hadthreetestpitsexcavatedwithnegativeresults. No artifacts
were found and no indication of intact cultural deposits were encountered. This site is recommended as
not eligible for the Register. The testing of these sites is described in greater detail below.
Newly Recorded Isolated Finds
SLA9859
This isolated find consists of two flakes and one piece of shatter. The flakes are tertiary and are grey
felsite and white chert. The shatter is grey felsite. The artifacts were located in a linear area of I 1
meters on a gentle hill slope on the first terrace to the east of Lorencito Canyon Creek. Isolated finds
are considered not eligible for the Register.
SLA9860
An isolated grey felsite tertiary flake located on aneast-facing bench above Little Jeff Canyon Creek.
Isolated finds are considered not eligible for the Register.
•
Lorencito5 V YandTestingCulRpt-RPT(475)Aug0l.wpd
