9. Delta Couuty Impacts and Other Environmental Impacts
The Board of County Commissioners has conditionally approved the Specific Development Appli-
cation for this operation (SD02-003) directly with Cecil and Pat Farnsworth.
As stated earlier, the maximum annual tonnage allowed for this operation is 70,000 tons per year.
The combined tonnage from the Farnsworth #2 Pit and the North Fork Pit is 70,000 tons per year
so that there is no true increase in tonnage over what was previously permitted in the area. All
trucks leaving the site will be covered and will utilize the existing entrance to Highway 133. No
new roads will be needed for this operation. Trucks will enter Highway 133 immediately west of
Paonia and can supply construction material needs in all directions. If 10 ton trucks are used, the
maximum number of annual loads is 7000. If 25 ton trucks are used, the maximum number of
trucks is 2780 per year. Assuming that 50% of the trucks will be 10 ton size and 50% will be 25
ton size, there would be 3971 loaded trucks leaving the site per year. If the operation operates only
8 months per yeaz, this results in an average of 4961oads per month for these months, and 4
months will have no loaded traffic. No significant dust will be produced since the gravel will be
wet upon extraction and the gravel road to the River Bottom site will have no fines. Also, the pro-
cessing equipment there will have sprays and enclosed crushers.
Overall, this location is excellent to supply the growing needs of development in this part of Delta
County. The alternative to this pit is to truck gravel from greater distances at increased cost and
increased truck traffic on the road system.
Once the site is reclaimed, a permanent lake will be left that is approximately 18-23 feet deep over
6.6 acres, with wetlands on the edges, that can be used for wildlife habitat in a dry part of the
County, where a lake of this type has good value.
There should be no significant demands on Delta County services from this operation since pro-
duction and reclamation will only involve personnel of 4-5 people on site at any given time. The
river crossing is planned to not interfere with any existing uses of the river for fishing or recreation.
North Fork Pit Mazch 04 26
