4 . Upon excavation, the sand, gravel and dirt mixture--
"pit run"--is taken to the plant site where it
will be loaded directly into the processing plant
or stockpiled to await processing. The plant
is comprised of several separate screens , conveyors,
crushers, storage bins and washing devices that
are used singly or more often in combination to
process the 10 to 20 products needed to meet
special requirements . Water is used to clean
all washed gravel products. The water is settled
at the site and recycled for future washings rather
than being released to a stream.
• The finished products are placed in stockpiles of
varying shapes and dimensions . A small stockpile
of 5,000 tons might be conical in shape, 30 feet
in height and have a. base diameter of about
100 feet; a large stockpile of 100 ,000 tons
might have a square shaped base about 220 feet
and a height of about 30 feet. , The amount of
material in stockpile must be adequate for
anticipated needs yet be held to a minimum by the
producer to minimize inventory costs . A surplus
• of some products is normal because the gravel
composition within the area varies as does the
rate of consumption of individual products.
B-5
