Shrubs will be planted at a total density per acre of 1,000, encompassing up to
• 20 percent of the affected area. Plantings will occur in clusters to facili-
tate "edge effect". Each cluster will be approximately 1/2 to 2 acres in size.
A spacing interval of seven feet between shrubs will be utilized. Transplanta-
tion of containerized stock will be implemented in early spring to assure ade-
quate soil moisture for shrub establishment (Stevens, 1981; Plunmer et al.,
1968).
Orchard Area - In future years within the Colorado Westmoreland Orchards,
apples, peaches and some cherries will be planted. However, cherries are not a
very good crop in this area due to the amount of frost the area receives. 225
trees will be planted per acre. Spacing will consist of 12 feet between trees
and 16 feet between rows. Planting will consist of whips, which are approximate-
ly 5/8" diameter and a height of 36 inches to 40 inches. No ground cover such as
• grass need be planted because it naturally fills in in this country by only
watering the area. Therefore, practice does not dictate the planting of any
ground cover with the new trees. A,11 trees will be planted approximately in ear-
ly April when irrigation water becomes available.
Before trees are planted in any area, the area will be plowed, then the
whips will be planted. As the trees grow, the area between the trees will be
mowed and the area right next to the trees will be sprayed with an herbicide.
Areas directly around each tree will be kept free from any grass or other ground
cover growth for a minimum of five to six years and preferably for the life of
the tree. The reason for keeping the area free from ground cover is because
ground cover encourages the population of mice. Mice will burrow underneath and
destroy the tree's root system, and also on a young tree they chew the bark off.
u
-30-
