The grass species were selected because they are native to Colorado and
are recommended for seedings of foothill range sites in the state (Hitchcock,
•
1950; Long, 1981). Additionally, they are extensively used in the west for
erosion control; grazing and wildlife plantings (Long, 1981).
Huban white sweetclover is an introduced annual legume which has been
used in range seedings primarily as green manure rather than forage (Vallen-
tine, 1971). It was chosen because it is known to reseed with even less vigor
than yellow sweetclover and will therefore be unlikely to persist longer than
one year (Plummer, Christensen and Monsen, 1968; Vallentine, 1971; Long,
1981). It will be used as green manure providing the disturbed soil with much
needed organic matter and nitrogen.
Seeding will be accomplished by hydraulic broadcast methods in late
fall/early winter. The resultant grass/forb cover will serve primarily as
• erosion control and livestock forage.
Native shrubs will be planted to enhance wildlife habitat on reclaimed
areas (MacArthur, 1981).
