where
• m = the minimum number of observations needed
t = at distribution value fora given confidence level (i.e., 1.28 at the 80%
confidence level)
s2 = the variance estimate for preliminary vegetation sampling
D = the level of accuracy desired for the estimate of the mean (i. e. 10%)
RESULTS
Description of Vegetation Types
Eight vegetation types were identified and two were sampled during the
course of the 1981 inventory. Table 1 indicates the types and acreages of
each within the permit area. The two vegetation types quantitatively sampled
were the pinon-juniper and mixed shrubs type. Four types have been disturbed
by mining activities at the OVM. Reference areas were selected for the pinon-
juniper and mixed shrubs types. It was concluded that the mixed shrubs refer-
ence area would suffice for the minimal disturbance in the oakbrush vegetation
Hype. Maps 6A and 68 indicate the distribution of the types within the permit
area.
Pinon-Juniper - The vegetation type where most of the surface facilities
of the OVM now occur is the pinon-juniper type. This type can be recognized
by the presence of pinon and juniper trees scattered throughout the landscape
in an open canopy fashion. Locally, Utah juniper dominated over pinon pine at
the mine site. Shrub species dominated the understory of which gambel oak,
Utah serviceberry, true mountain mahogany and bitterbrush were most prevalent.
~ very sparce weedy herbaceous understory was present within the type. More
prevalent species included cheatgrass, Richardson tansymustard and bedstraw.

-5-
