Above ground standing biomass of herbaceous species (production) was
determined as the mean dry weight of all species at all plots within each
•
inventory area, and expressed in gm/m2 and lbs/acre. Shrub and tree density
values were computed as the mean number of plants per 50m2 or 25m2 and per
acre for all species.
Species diversity was obtained using cover data in a Shannon-Wiener
index. Species diversity values were computed based upon cover data. The
total number of species (N) observed in the plots was tallied. The Shannon-
Wiener index of diversity (H') was calculated for each vegetation type by:
H' _ -~pi 'log pi
where H' =index of species diversity
S =number of species
pi = is the proportion of cover of the ith species
• in the sample.
The range of the index is from 0 to logs.
The evenness component was determined for each vegetation type by:
H'
E =Hmax
where E = equitability (range 0-1)
H' =observed species diversity
Hmax = maximum species diversity = logs
Sample adequacy for all data was computed following Snedecor and Cochran, 1967
as
t2s2
m= 2
D
•
-4-
