They are naturally dry and tend to be found on valley floors or
mountain benches where soils are deeper. Graminoids dominate the srasslands, but a large
number of forbs is also present. Dominant grass species include needlegrasses (Stipa sp.),
mountain muhly (Muhlenbergia montana), prairie junegrass (Koleria ntacrantha), blue grama
(Bouteloua gracilis), wheatgrasses (Agropyron sp.), and bluegrasses (Poa sp.). Dominant species
of forbs include western yarrow (Achil[ea lanulosa), fringed sage (Artemesia frigida), and trailing
fleabane (Engeron flagellaris). Some pockets of shrubs occur within these grasslands. Snowberry
(Symp/toricarpos rotundaflorus) dominates slight depressions that capture and hold snow for long
periods in winter. Skunkbrush, red currant (Ribes cerettm), and Wood's rose are also scattered
about the grasslands.
Several rangeland techniques were used to improve the grassland communities for cattle grazing.
Several areas were lightly disked or plowed and planted with palatable grass species to increase
species diversity and break-up decadent blue grama sod. The valley bottoms in Lorencito Canyon
and several adjacent canyons were groomed with a pitting apparatus to break-up decadent blue
grama sod and form catchment depressions within the soil to caprure dew, precipitation, and snow.
•
cc~..n5ipcn~nmcr P. im~n 5 (revised 6/30/97)
