Subject: Inspection of Industrial Wastewater Treatment Facilities, CDPS Permit #CO-0044776
for Bowie No. 2 Mine, Delta County
Dear Mr. Bear:
The Water Quality Control Division performed an inspection of the industrial wastewater treatment
facilities for Bowie No. 2 Mine on Apri13, 2002. This Ietter summarizes our findings, and our
inspection report is enclosed.
The Bowie No. 2 Mine is an underground coalmine using the longwall extraction method. A total of
200 people work at the facility in three shifts. Coal is transferred from the mine portal downhill to
the truck loadout via a conveyor system. A train loadout is currently under construction. Wastewater
is generated from stormwater control, mine water dischazge, and domestic uses.
Wastewater dischazges from this facility are regulated under CDPS Permit #CO-0044776, The
current version of this permit is Amendment #3 dated March 4, 2002, and effective May 1, 2002.
There are seven permitted outfalls at Bowie No. 2 Mine.
• Outfa11001 is also known as Pond B. It is a settling pond for surface runoff, and the effluent
from Outfa11004. Outfa11001 has not had a surface discharge during the past 2 years. It is
located at 38° 55.20 north, 107° 32.54 west.
• Outfal] 002 is also known as Pond C. It is a settling pond for surface runoff. This outfall has
discharged once in the past 2 years. Flow measurement at that time was by bucket and
stopwatch. Outfa11002 is located at 38° 55.44 north, 107° 32.24 west.
• Outfall 003 is also known as Pond D. It is a settling pond for surface runoff This outfall has
not had a surface dischazge during the past 2 yeazs. It is located at 38° 55.44 north, 107°
32.19 west.
• Outfa11004 is the facility wastewater treatment plant. It dischazges on a regulaz basis. The
facility is a package mechanical treatment plant consisting of an aerated influent basin, airlift
