Long.
Division Director
DATE: March 16, 1992
T0: Larry Oehler
FROM: Tom Schreiner
RE: Adequacy Response - ZMK Mining, Inc., File No. M-91-146
I have reviewed the hydrologic aspects of the February 24, 1992 revised permit
application for the ZMK Gravel Pit submitted in response to the Division's
January 13, 1992 and January 24, 1992 adequacy letters. I offer the following
comments.
1. ZMK Mining, Inc. has proposed a wire/rail erosion control structure at
the upstream end of Phase I and II pits to minimize headcutting. The
Division requires that ZMK Mining, Inc. complete installation of the
erosion control structure prior to mining and maintain the structure
until a stable stream channel is re-established following mining.
2. The Division requests that ZMK Mining, Inc. submit a longitudinal cross
section of the Uncompahgre River prior to mining showing the expected
channel profile during final reclamation.
3. The Division requests that ZMK Mining, Inc. specify the thickness of
riprap to be used on the east and west banks of the Uncompahgre River.
4. The Division requests that ZMK Mining, Inc. submit monitoring well design
and completion reports for the three existing monitoring wells. The
Division also requests that ZMK Mining, Inc. commit to a monthly
monitoring schedule measuring depth to water table. ZMK Mining, Inc.
should cease mining and notify the MLRD immediately if the measured water
table is within two feet of the excavation. Monthly water table
measurements should be submitted in the annual report.
