~•C

MEMO
DATE: February 2, 1993
TO: Marcus Middleton ~/~~
FROM: Collin Stewart
SUBJECT: Inspection of Leakage, Site 115, Fish Creek Borehole Settling Ponds
My observations indicate that the leakage that presently occurs through the berm at the settling pond
site does not pose any hazard to the integrity of the berm at this time. Further, should failure oC the
berm occur, a review of the surface topography indicates that any out Row will be contained within
the topographic basin that occurs immediately below the pond site. Therefore, the worst case will not
result in any significant damage to persons or properly.
After reviewing the leakage at the settling ponds, 1 agree with your assessment that there is probably a
break in the inlet or discharge line buried in the dam. I recommend the repair be made in the
summer, when site conditions are conducive to the best possible work.
In the interim, I recommend the following course of action:
1. Perform weekly inspections of the berm. This inspection should be performed by the same
person or persons. The inspection specifically will note any changes:
(a) in the condition of the berm;
(b) in the extent of the soggy area along the top of the berm;
(c) in the amount of seepage;
(d) in the extent of the seepage; and,
(e) in the color of the seepage water.
2. If any of these changes occur, re-evaluate the stability of the structure and develop a new
action plan.
cc: Rick Mills
Terry Ritzel
