Borehole Information Update
]an. 29, 2002
Page 2
ownership remains unknown. BLM correspondence dated August 12, 200] listed 17 Ken- wells
in the exploration license area. Two of the wells aze most likely owned by the USGS (DH-5 and
DH-G) and Ken should not be responsible for reclamation of these wells. The current count
For Kerr wells in the Exploration License Area is ] 5. There are another G wells likely owned by
USGS. Drawing BLM-2, Marr Mine Area Exploration Boreholes/Wells, provides an up-dated
inventory of the wells in the Marr Mine Area. Another round of field reconnaissance is planned
for the spring of 2002. Boreholes/wells will be marked and flagged to facilitate field location
for reclamation activities. Additional information may be collected during the reconnaissance
effort such as GPS coordinates, water levels, and total depth, which may provide additional
insight into well ownership and final abandonment requirements. Information in the project
fdes indicates that two wells, AO-2 and AK-2, previously reported as destroyed, were located
during the previous field inventory efforts. If the planned field reconnaissance confirms that
these wells exist in a condition that allows abandonment, they will be reclaimed as pazt of the
program.
The plan for sealing the wells and Boreholes was previously provided as the Borehole
Reclamation Plan submitted January 3, 2000. This plan is consistent with the CDMG Rules and

i1,~ ~) I ~~l
,/ ~ ~1~ ~~
~) JIL ~ 1
5 1 I f ~,~r
L ~~t , v'' Regu]ations for Surface Mining (4.07). Final plugging requirements for each borehole/well will
be determined based on existing information or supplemental information collected during the
field reconnazssance component of the borehole reclamation plan and will reflect consideration
of whether or not a known aquifer was encountered in the well and if confined or unconfined
conditions are present. Tables 1 and 2 present the preliminary plugging plan for each
borehole/well based on cuaent information. Additional evaluation of each well will be
completed in the field and final plugging methods may be modified as appropnate.
An evaluation of the well information and characteristics identified several wells with potential
future benefiaal uses. The wells with potentitia3 future beneficial uses are listed below.
• Current water quality monitoring - 79-1, 79-2, 79-3, 79-G1, AO-2A and SP-Ol (new
well)
• Future coal exploration or production - DH-3B, DH-5, DH-G
• Possible water wells - 79-G0, 80-2, 80-] 1, BLM 20, water supply well (at office)
Wells 79-1, 79-2, 79-3, 79-G1, AO-2A and SP-Ol are currently monitored, so they ~vdl be
abandoned based on water quality monitoring results under specific recommendations. DH-3B,
DH-5 and DH-6 ([JSGS wells) may be useful for future development of coal. Several wells
have been identified as possible water wells. The most promising wells are listed above. Other
potential water wells include 79-7, 79-23, 79-27 due to long screened intervals and relatively
shallow depth to water. 'T'hese wells, however, have a smaller diameter casing (2-inch PVC) so
additional testing relative to their suitability as water wells may be appropriate prior to a final
recommendation. The wells identified with potential future beneficial uses are indicated on
Map BLM-2, Mazr Mine Area Exploration Boreholes/~~/ells.
