Banks and Gesso, LLC
Present Weed Species
Correspondence from the Montrose County Weed Control Department indicates that
following annual weed species may be, but are not necessarily, present in the general
vicinity of the subject property in limited numbers: common purslane, common
cocklebur, shepherd purse, red pigweed, common sunflower, prickly lettuce, black
nightshade, Russian thistle, kochia, halogeton, purple mustard, flixweed and
lambsquater. Additionally, perennial weeds that might possibly exist in the general area
of the subject property include milkweed, chicory, field bindweed and curly dock. None
of the above weed species are recognized as "noxious" by the State.
Identify Prevention Methods
The following methods will be implemented in order to help prevent weed infestation
after reclamation is complete:
• Prior to stripping, stockpiling or re-spreading of topsoil, the topsoil will be
inspected for weeds. If weeds are present, they will be removed.
Equipment will be cleaned when moved from weedy to non-weedy areas, in
order to eliminate potential spreading of weed seeds.
• Vegetation will be established as soon as possible upon completion of
reclamation grading to help reduce the length of time the site is exposed to
possible weed infestation.
Post-Mining Monitoring
Once post-mining grades have been achieved and the site seeded for revegetation, the
site will be monitored for future infestations of noxious weeds. Monitoring will occur
twice per year.
Weed Elimination Methods
The "Integrated Weed Management Strategies" received from the Montrose County
Weed Control Department describes various methods for controlling weed species
native to the County. If any of these weeds are identified during subsequent monitoring
activities, their respective management strategies will be employed. For each strategy,
the mechanical method will be used initially. If the mechanical method proves to be
ineffective, either the biological or chemical method will be used.
