The Division has not identified any potential contaminants, which would be generated by the mining
activity in amounts large enough to cause significant groundwater contamination problems.
~. Effects on River Level
Since during mining the pit dewa[ering water will be returned to the river, and after reclamation the
pits will be lined, [he Division does not anticipate any significant impacts on the river levels.
6. Effects on Course of River
As discussed in concern number 3, the operator will maintain a 200-foot setback during the flood
season. Also, as noted under Comment 2 of the operator's May 24, 2000 "Response to Adequacy
Comments" letter, they will measure, monitor, and evaluate the effectiveness of the existing concrete
rubble for South Platte River channel stabilization and will utilize other "soft" stabilization techniques.
These measures along with the stipulation described under concern Number 3, should minimize the
possibility of a change in the river's channel.
Methods of How the Area be Reclaimed
It is not clear to the Division just what the concern is here, but by reclaiming [he azea for a developed
water resource, the Division believes that the area will have been reclaimed for a beneficial use.
"General" Concerns Not Specific to any Particular Exhibit
Mr. Ocher also expressed the following concerns.
Disturbance of the ecology system.
2. Destruction of the wildlife habitat
3. The negative effects on the livestock
Response
Ecology
This concern is too general for the Division to address. We do believe that the proposed mining and
reclamation plan will minimize adverse impacts on the area and will result in a beneficial use of the
site after reclamation.
2. Destruction of Wildlife Habitat
The operator will maintain a 200-foot setback from the river, this riparian area is the best wildlife
habitat. The majority of the area to be mined is either overgrazed rangeland or abandoned cropland
which has a much lower value for wildlife.
Effects on Livestock
