LIlVIITED IMPACT 11~LICATION FOR
PIT NUMBER ONE
APPLICANT: MARILYN VAZQUEZ/BRUCE DIAMOND
EXHIBIT B
SITE DESCRIPTION (Page 1 of 3)
• General Site Characteristics
The general character of this site and the surrounding area is open, generally flat, and rocky. The
site is at approximately 7800 feet elevation and receives approximately 12 inches of rain per year.
Due to climate, soil and sparse native vegetation, it supports minimal livestock without irrigation.
• Vegetation
Existing vegetation on this site is sparse, approximately 40%. Primary species are blue gramma
grass and Indian rice grass; other species in minimal amounts are yucca and cactus.
According to the Soil Conservation Service (SCS)*, vegetation associated with the Ouray
gravelly loam (OuB) is bunchgrass such as Indian ricegrass and needle-and-thread. For the San
Isabel stony sandy loam (SsC), vegetation is bunchgrass such as junegrass, bunch bluegrass and
Indian ricegass.
• Soils
Large and small cobbles, and up to medium size boulders are abundant on the surface, covering
approximately 20% of the site.
According to mapping by the SCS, the soil types on this site are approximately 70% Ouray
gravelly loam, thick surface variant, i to 3 percent slopes (OuB) and 30% San Isabel stony sandy
loam 1 to 5 percent slopes (SsC). The following is reprinted from the Soil Conservation Service
report noted herein:
OuB
This soil is on terraces that parallel the main river and streams in the central and northern parts
of Chaffee County, generally east of the Arkansas River.
Included with this soil in mapping are small areas of Dominson gravelly sandy loam, 1 to 9
percent slopes. Southwest of Salida and Southeast of Buena Vista, there aze azeas of included
soils that are less than 40 inches deep over cobbles and gravel and are slightly calcareous within
12 inches of the surface.
Also included are small areas of Ouray soils that have a surface layer of gravelly sandy loam.
Runoff is slow on this soil, and the hazard of erosion is shght. Most of the acreage is irrigated
and used for crops, mainly alfalfa hay, potatoes and small grains.
* Soil Survey of Chaffee-Lake Area, Colorado, Parts of Chaffee and Lake Counties, prepared by
the Unites States Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service in Cooperation with
Colorado Agricultural Experiment Station, Issued October, 1975.
