SHELTO N, Director
January 9, 1984
Mr. John D. Schmahl
Mrs. Marilyn M. Schmahl
2301 River Road
Grand Junction, Colorado 81501
Re: Surface Rock Pit - File No. M-84-001
Dear h1r, and Mrs. Schmahl:
The Division has reviewed the above-referenced permit application
following questions and comments. As you know, the Division has s
this application for consideration by the Mined Land Reclamation F
their March 22-23, 1484 meeting. To allow for Division review of
responses to the following questions and comments, please respond
by March 2, 1984.
A. Exhibit D - Mining Plan
nd has the
heduled
and at
n writing
of ~1. Will both Parcels A and B be mined simultaneously? a=~ ~~~'~`~~~ S.ar,,, ,r,\ ~.;r ~
~„ , ,r ..
n~ ~ What is the anticipated life of this mine? ~t~ y,~s
-tip
~~~ To what depth will mining occur? ~ M n'"" ""~ G' ~.v 1 L
~ 4. A review of the map provided for Exhibit C pertaining to Parce B depicts
an overhead powerline transversing the western side from north to outh.
Pursuant to Rule 1.56(5) of the Rules and Regulations, the operato roust
obtain an executed agreement with the owners of this powerline. T is
agreement specifies that any dmnage that may occur because of this mining
operation will be compensated for by the operator. ~;
g~< 0'
,G 5. Will there be any blasting during the mining of the decorative rock? N ~~,pr ,~
~~ 6. The operator specifies in the text of this exhibit and on the ~ ap of
~~ Exhibit C that there will be no affect to existing drainages and t at there
will be no water diversions of impoundments. The Division is very concerned
about the surface hydrology at this site. N review of the snap for Exhibit C
depicts a nwnber of drainages in the Parcel A area and one major d ainage in
the Parcel B area. Because of the disturbances that will occur to these
drainages during mining and the potential for water flowing over t e mine site
picking up a significant amount of sediment, the Division believes the
operator should commit to constructing some sediment ponds. These sediment
ponds would only be for during the mining operation and would be o literated
during the reclamation phase. Sediment ponds would minimize the disturbance
to the prevailing hydrologic balance, pursuant to Rule 6.2(a) of t e Rules and
Regulation. The operator needs to specify the following infonnati n
pertaining to the sedimentation ponds.
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203 Tel.
