Below 18 inches the soil }s
moderately alkaline. The very friable surface is sandy loam:
The subsoil is sandy clay loam which grades to clay loam or
loam below 20 inches. This soil lends itself to cultivation
even though the sandy surface is blown easily. Showers soak
down readily in the sandy surface and the more clayey subsoil
has a good water holding capacity.
RANGE SITE DESCRIPTION
Sandy Plains A scattering of yucca, sand sage and three awn serve to set
this site apart from the hardlands. Rapid entry of water
into the surface soils combine with moderately good water
• holding capacity, to make suitable. conditions for growth of
. blue grams, sand reed, bluestem, sand dropseed, needle and
thread and side-oats grams. Plants produce as much as 1800
lbs in favorable years.
Basalt Breaks Soils are stony clay looms underlain by basalt on steep
slopes: Water intake rates are slow. Large basalt boulders
appear on the~~surface thus providing a high soil moisture
relationship and favoring the deep .rooted grasses, trees, and
shrubs. Dominant grasses are big and little bluestems, and
• sideoats muhly, switchgrass, tall dropseed, Indian grass, and
' blue•grama. Shrubs and trees that are common are skunkbrush,
wild rose, currant, choke cherry, mountain mahogany, rock
spires, deer brush, oak, and juniper.' Estimated total annual
yield is 1200 - 2000 lbs of air dry vegetation per acre.
•
