W. Walters, District Materials Engineer 1:=~~~
Colorado Department of Highways
P.0. Box 536 I'~Leli _'
Pueblo, CO 81002 Ander,o
Richards
Dear Mr. Walters:
Leigh
I have field checked the two sand and gravel pits that you referre o
in the Request for Assistance and here is the information asked for:
rl/~ER
The pit in the NE'/, of section 11, township 325, Range 51W, is in Ascalon
Sandy Loam 3 to 5% slopes with a range site of Sandy Plains in the Central
High Plains (67 Land Resource Area). You are presently using the sand
and gravel that is a parent material of this soil series. It is a very
old pit that has some natural reseeding on the lesser slopes. These are
what we call go-back condition of sand-drop grass, three-awn grass, and
annual weeds. In some of the area there are very good mid-grasses, such
as, Side oats grama, and Silverbeard bluestem.
• SNA,wvDu
On the second pit in the SW'/a of section 15 and NW'/, of section 22, town-
ship 335, Range 53W, the pit is in Basalt Breaks range site in fair
condition. For reclamation of these pits and re-vegetation I would
suggest not disturbing the area of go-back condition because of wind
erosion. The area of newly disturbed soil, vertical slopes, and hummocks
should be shaped to three to one slopes or flatter and seeded to the
following grass mixture:
Species Variety PLS/Ac.
Silverbeard Bluestem 3 lbs.
Side Oats Grama Vaughn 3 lbs.
Western Wheatgrass Barton 6 lbs.
Sandy bluestem ELide 6 lbs. could be
substituted for the Silverbeard Bluestem, and .
Thickspike Wheatgrass Whitman 4 lbs. could be
substituted for the Western Wheatgrass.
• Glenn M.
