5
•

ROCK TESTING PROCEDURES
P}LSICAL PROPERTY TESTS
General. Laboratory tests were used to estimate the
physical properties of core samples from the various rock unit
locations. The tests were performed using standard laboratory
sample preparation and testing procedures. A description of the
types of tests is presented in the following paragraphs.
Uniasial Compressive Strength. The uniaxial compressive
strength, which is one of the most common physical properties
usually cited, was determined by placing rock cores having length
to diameter ratios of approximately 2.5 to 3.5 in a standard
testing machine and loading them to failure. The unisxial com-
pressive strength(U) is determined as follows:
U P
A
[1]
where P ~ load at failure
A ~ upper surface area
Elastic Modulus. The tangent modulus was determined using
the axial displacement recorded in the rock during the uniaxial
compression test. The calculation for the tangent modulus is
performed using the following formula:
Et (AZE ) IZ]
Ql
where AGZ ~ change in stress
AEZ ~ change fn strain
of ~ stress, usually at SOX failure stress
L J
$EEGMILLEN INTENNATIONAL
