r1
L_J
•
cuts permanently at their existing configurations rather than
disturbing their vegetation.
4.4.5 Rock Cuts
Rock cuts that have been excavated at the site can be
divided into two groups: steep to vertical rock cuts ex-
cavated mostly in sound rocks and rock cuts excavated at flat-
ter slope angles.
The rock cut above the mine portal bench, the cut
above the parking lot, the cut above the office and warehouse
and the east part of the cut above the diversion channel be- ~
long to the first group. The stepped rock cut above the road
between the portal and fan levels and most of the rock cut it
above the diversion channel belong to the second group.
We feel that for reclamation purposes, the rock cuts
of the first group should be flattened to a more reasonable
slope wherever the topography permits. Flattening to the "most
moderate slope possible" is required by article 4.14.2 (b) of
the CPtLRB that specifies the elimination of highwalls. The
flattening is particularly important within the upper cut
portion where potential rock fall problems have to be ex-
pected. Placing of a buttress at the toe of the cut will
significantly increase the long-term factor of safety of the
cut.
lJe recommend that such measures are planned for the
~ cut above the portal bench, the cut above the crushing and
screening level and for the east part of the diversion chan-
I, nel cut. The same measure could be implemented at the cuC
above the parking lot and the ctlt above the office; flat-
. i tening of the upper parts will be ditficult because of the
steep original grade above the cut crests.
II - 36 -
b GEPMYDRO CONSUIfING, INC
