r.esponseof the fill to sudden changes in around water con-
dition.
Inclinometers, when properly installed and operated,
can serve as warning devices. Any failure of the crushing
and screening level fill would be preceded by increasingly
rapid deformations within the body of the fill; these de-
formations can be easily detected by the inclinometer.
Stabilizing measures can usually be implemented when such
deformations are detected and the failure can be avoided.
Should the mine management decide to implement the
above discussed monitoring program, a period of at least one
year would be necessary to obtain sufficient information on
the ground water and stability conditions. A much more ac-
curate set of data would then be available to support the
decisions on the crushing and screening level fill treatment.
Whichever alternative of the corrective measures is
chosen by the management, it will be necessary to provide
reliable surface drainage of the area. Our analyses clearly
shoca the importance of keeping the ground water below the
original ground and the importance of reliable surface drain-
age of the fill area since surface seepage can significantly
contribute to such a condition. Problems of surface drainage
have currently been studied by Clerrick and Company; if their
findings indicate any need for improving the surface drain-
age, such measures should be implemented as soon as possible.
4.2.2 Other Fi11s
A close examination of three Geolo;;ic Sections A-A',
B-B', and C-C' (Plates ~ through ~) indicates that other
~~
• ~ - 24 -
I.
II GEONVDRO CONSULTING, INC.
