•
4.0 DISCUSSION AND RECOPTMENDATIONS
4.1 GENERAL
This section presents our evalution of existing
cuts and fills at the site, of proposed future construction,
and of final reclamation of the site. Our evaluation is
based on our original geotechnical review of the site, our
subsequent field program of drilling, test pitting, and
sampling, the testing of the materials sampled, and the
results of our stability analyses.
4.2 EXISTING FACILITIES
4.2.1 Crushing and Screening Level Fi11
L~
•
The results of the stability analyses of the crush-
ing and screening level fill as presented in Appendix C in-
dicate safety factors close to unity against shallow, near
surface failures (SF = 0.9i for a fully drained slope). A
considerably higher safety factor (SF = 1.87) was found for
a deep seated failure, assuming again a fully drained slope.
The inclusion of significant pore pressure that could arise
due to ground or surface water seepage producing a saturated
zone within the fill, considerably decreases the calculated
safety factors.
It is important to understand this behavior; if the
fill is kept dry, probable failures of it caould be only sur-
~ ficial and of a Limited yardage. ldith a partial saturation,
poten[ia1 failures would become deeper and their yardage would
i~ considerably increase.
- ~I -
GE6MYDR0 CONSULTING, INC.
