•
•
•
2.0 SITE CONDITIONS
2.1 TOPOGRAPHY
The site is located on a steep slope of the north
side of the valley of the North Fork of the Gunnison P.iver.
A series of benches have been constructed b;T devel_oping cuts
into the colluvial soils and bedrock and using this material
to construct fills, as shown on Plate 2. The existing mine
facilities are located on these benches. The fills have
generally been constructed at their angle of repose, so fill
slopes are typically steep, on the order of 35°.
The natural slopes which extend above the uppermost
(fan level) fill are steep, typically on the order of 1 (ver-
tical.) 2 (horizontal.)
Below the lowermost (crushing and screening level)
fill, the natural slopes flatten to form a more gently slop-
ing bench on which it is proposed to locate a waste rock pile.
Slopes in this area are typically on the order of 1 (v)
5 (h).
2.~ GEOLOGY
The bedrock at the site consists of Upper Cretaceous
hle:~a Verde Formation above an elevation of approximately
6,f375 feet and Upper Cretaceous Afancos Shale below this elev-
ation.
The Dlesa Verde Formation consists of shales, silt-
stones, and sandstones with interbedded coal. Some of the
more resistant units are cliff forming. The Pfancos Shale is
a thick sequence of marine sediments which typically forms
- 5 -
GEOl/YDRO CONSULTING, INC.
