Weigh duplicate 15 g. samples of air-dried soil or roc k <br />interbur.den, crushed to pass 60-mesh screen, into a <br />250-rn1. 1;rlenmeyer flask for hot-caater e::Craction. A <br />blank should be carried through all operations along <br />wit11 samples. <br />• <br />All glassware must be scrupulously clean and free of <br />sodium and potassium salts. There is no pickup of sodium <br />or potassium from °yrex glassware. <br />2. "Wet" the coal sample caith 5 ml. of methyl or ethyl alcohol. <br />The addition of a small amount of alcohol facilitates <br />"wetting" of the rock particles by water. <br />3. Add 100 ml. of distilled caater•to each sample. Swirl <br />the flask to assure the sample has been thoroughly caet <br />by the solution. • <br />4. Insert a cold-finger condenser into each flask and digest <br />the samples at, or just below, boiling for 16 hours <br />5. Remove samples from hot plate and filler thru medium <br />porosity filter paper into a 250-m1. volumetric flask. <br />Wash soil or interburden sample on filter paper several <br />times with hot, deionized caater, cool filtrate to room <br />tremperature and fill flask to volume. hiix solution well. <br />6. Transfer solution to plastic polyethylene bottle, seal <br />and label solution. , <br /> <br />
