,.
.,~
'.,The following information is provided in response to the Jq y 13~ 1981 let-
ter from Brian E. Munson, Reclamation Specialist, regarding the Hayden
Gulch Mine Permit application.
Review Question
,': 2.05.04
(2)(c) 2. Also, clarify why the depth of replaced topsoil inc eases from
1.4 feet in 1980 to 2.1 feet in 1985. This information was d rived from
the reclaimed acres in Table 2 and the topsoil replaced in'ITable 3. Also,
since the applicant states that there is an average of 27 ij~ches of topsoil
available, why. are stripping depths less than two feet? the a plicant is
advised to average alt depths from sampling sites in order to determine how
much topsoil is available.
Response
2. Topsoil depths increase due to the, fact that topsoil re~oved
prior to 1980 was not as deep as the. overall mine avc~rage.~ As
mining moves to the South, topsoil depths increase','. and ~~then
level out.

Based on field estimates by YTN, overall topsoil depths sf~ould
average 27 inches. However, the variability of topsoil within
the mining zone may range from approximately 5-34 inches. 7!hus,
the numbers used in calculating topsoil volumes are based ory es-
timated depths. Actual field operations will vary from ~hese
projected values. As previously explained in the topsoil h~ndl-
ing procedures, Hayden Gulch (H-G) will place cut staked prior to
topsoil removal so that it is clear to field superviso~;y per~son-
nel exactly how much a horizon is to be removed.
