UTAH INTERNATIONAL INC.
BOX 187 - CRAIG. COLORADO 81625
303-824-4401
May 14, 1980.
Al Whittaker
Colorado Division of Wildlife
6060 Broadway
Denver, CO 80216
Dear A1,
This letter is in resF.onse to our phone conversation of 1•tarch 18,
1980, to reiterate the iter.s ~:e discussed.
As I understand from our conversation, we should not be concerned
with fawning activities here at Trapper "tine due to the generally random
location of fawning. Since as _:ou indicated, such activities are hard
to accurately survey and to=ate, we intend to state that some fawning
occurs in the mine plan area but we are unable to document the degree at
which such occurs.
• Your advice on calving activity indicated that peak calving is the
first week in June, between 5,500 and 10,500 feet, following the snow
line. We have no elevations reaching 8',500 fee[ but the "Ranking P1aps"
show calving areas on or adjacent to the mine plan area. Therefore, a
calving survey will be Wade. i1e will follow }•our advice such that a
single elk seen during this time period will be assumed to be calving.
I understand that c:e should not fence reseeded areas but attempt
to bait the animals awav. We are working on a browse improvement plan
now.
In addition, I understand that there are no threatened or endangered
arthopods or herpetofauna in our area.
As you suggested, we will discuss the greater sandhill crane in
our permit application but due to the distance of any possible nesting
sites from the mine plan area, no disturbance of nesting activities
will occur.
Thank you for your assistance on these matters.
Sincerely,
cc: R.
