Collins, CO 80526
March 13, 1981
Mr. Neil Sprague
Route 2, Box 99A
Berthoud, CO 80513
RE: Berthoud Pink Quarry
Dear Mr. Sprague:
The three sites at this quarry were examined on March 1!3th. As a
result of our visit to these sites we have the following recommendations.
The soils at the two northern sites consist of Pinata soils and rock
\ outcrops. The Pinata soil is a shallow, well drained, sCOny sandy loam.
~~ The southernmost site is located in an area identified as a ~aller-Carnero
stony sandy loam. This soil is similar to the Pinata soil. (See the
Latimer County Area Soil Survey for more soil information.) ,
Vegetation on the quarry sites is very sparse and consi t of annuals,
sage and a few hardy grasses. The areas surrounding the qua ties are
quite natural in appearance and vegetation. Big and little luestem,
side-oats grama, blue grama, Griffiths wheatgrass and other atives exist
under shrub and tree cover of Mountain Mahogany aad Ponderos$ Pine.
Reclamation of these areas will be difficult because of~~the lack of
topsoil or any substantial amounts of fertile unconsolidated material.
To aid in reclamation, asrA future areas that are scraped to xpose bed-
rock should have all unconsolidated gathered and stockpiled. This mate-
rial should be protected from erosion (seeded) and spread ov r the area
after mining is complete. If revegetation is desired after fining is
completed, the area should be graded and shaped to resemble he surround-
ing terrain. No slopes to be seeded should be steeper than :1. Steeper
areas should be terraced. The following seeding mix could b used to
revegetate the area.
of Mix
big bluestem (Raw) 20
little bluestem (Pastura) 15
side-oats grama (Vaughn) 15
western wheatgrass (Barton) 25
intermediate wheatgrass (Amur) 25
Total
4.
2.
2.
8
24.

0
