COMMERCIAL TESTING 8c ENGINEERING CO.
GENERAL OFFICES: 1919 6017TH HIGHLAND AVE.. SUITE 210-8. LOMBARD. ILLINOIS fi0td8 • TEL: 630-953-9700 FAX: fi30-957.9306
SINCE 1908
March 25, 1998
Attention: Mr. Jim Stover
J.E. Stover & Associates
2768 Compass Drive, Suite 101
Grand Junction, CO 81506
Dear Mr. Stover:
PLEASE ADDRESS ALL CORRESPONDENCE TO:
4665 PARIS ST., SUITE 8-200
DENVER, CO 80239
TEL: (303)373-4772
FA%: (303) 373-4791
As per our conversation on Monday morning, the 23rd of March, Commercial
Testing & Engineering (CT&E) regrets the results of the fathead minnow
control failure and subsequent cancellation. Our initial excitement in
using CT&E's own hatchery bred minnows for a chronic bioassay was
equaled by the disappointment of the resulting mortalities and test
cancellation.
Historically, effluent from North Thompson Creek Mine is not chronically
toxic to fathead minnows. Results from this bioassay indicate that
CT&E's test organisms were of poor health, although not visibly, prior
to usage and that the NTCM effluent is not chronically toxic.
Although the health of those minnows may not have been viable, CT&E is
striving to reduce dependency upon outside vendors for test organisms,
such as fathead minnows. This in turn will keep costs to our clients
down. Until we deem CT&E's own <24 hour old minnows 100% viable, we
will continue to order test organisms from an outside vendor in the near
future. We wish to avoid a similar set of circumstances that surrounded
the North Thompson Creek Mine WET test controls-
Furthermore, referencing our conversation that same morning, J.E. Stover
& Associates will aot be charged for this bioassay. You will receive an
invoice for "ao charge".
We greatly appreciate and understand the amount of effort you make in
collecting effluent from the North Thompson Creek Mine discharge site.
I apologize for any and all inconveniences related to this error. CT&E
hopes to continue providing quality biomonitoring services for J.E.
Stover & Associates in the future.
Sincerely,
Commercyi~al`Testing & Engineering
~:~t.vr; /Ifcd.~
Chris Theel
Biomonitoring Supervisor
~~~ SGS Member of the SGS Group (Societe Generale de Surveillance)
OVER 40 BRANCH LABORATORIES STRATEGICALLY LOCATED IN PRINCIPAL COAL MINING AREAS, TIDEWATER AND GREAT LAKES PORTS.
