The following is my recommendation for reclaiming the Andesite Rock
Company quarry near Lyons, Colorado:
1. Soil material containing oil from areas including roads, work
area, fuel area, e[c., that have been oiled should be scraped
off and buried in an arer. that will not erode or leach.
2. Topsoil from the overburden should be stockpiled and spread
over the entire area, except the slope directly adjacent to
St. Vrain Creek, to a depth of 6-12 inches. The greater the
• depth rile better the chance of establishing a vegetative cover.
This material shuuid also he packed and level.
3. The slope into St. Vrain Creek should be left as it is at the
present time - riprapped with large rock.
4. The following mix should be seeded:
Species Variety lbs. PLS*/Ac.
Sideoats grama Vaughn 3.0
Little Bluestem Pastura 2.0
Blue grama Covington 1.0
Western wheatgrass Arriba 4.0
*PLS = Pure Live Seed = Purity x Germination c 100
5. Drilling this seed with a good grassland drill that has depth
bands, seedbox agitation and packer wheels is necessary.
