logs obtained during previous studies of the subject areas to
provide insight as to subsurface conditions at depths beyond
the reach of test pits.
A-3 GEOPRORPHIC UNITS
The areas of our study were divided into several ¢eomor-
phic units (physiographic units) that are characterized by
identical geologic and morphologic conditions. In particular,
attention was paid to the units that belong to alluvial val-
leys; mapping has been performed in less detail in qualifying
the geomorphic units of the upland outside the alluvial val-
ley.
Individual geomorphic units are described below.

•
Plan-made cuts and fills have been constructed in connec-
-----------------------
tion with mine-related facilities. The material of the fills
is generally derived from local sources and consists of sandy,
silty and clayey soils with a significant percentage of gravel,
cobbles and boulders. P4any of the fills are comprised of the
borrow from excavated cut areas.
Flood_plain_and_terrace_alluvium are the deposits identi-
-- -- --- ------- --------
fied in the alluvial areas, consisting of a mixture of clay,
silt, sand, gravel, cobbles and boulders. These materials may
form lenses of similar-sized material, or may occur as a fair-
ly homogeneous mixture. Soils occasionally show mottling and
contain organic material.
Slumping_of_fine_grained material_in_steep_natural_slopes
has been identified along the boundary of the alluvium with
the fine-grained slope outwash deposits. The slumps occur in
the fine-grained outwash material, are localized and limited in
extent. Individual blocks are identifiable in the slumped
area.
A-2
GEONYDRO CONSULTING, INC.
