14
Reve eg tation
The focus and goal of revegetation at the site will be the establishment of effective vegetation
cover that will provide a stable self-sustaining vegetation community that compliments the native
vegetation on the surrounding areas. To this end, replacement of vegetation will focus on
establishment of a vigorous herbaceous community with scattered low shrubs and half-shrubs.
Two specific seed mixes have been developed for the site; one seed mix will be planted adjacent
to the pond within disturbed areas. The second seed mix is specifically designed to minimize
erosion from wave and wind action along the east shoreline and margins of the pond.
Seeding
Herbaceous revegetation of the reclaimed area is proposed to minimize impacts to the physical
environment by reducing wind and surface water erosion, and impacts to the biologic community
by providing wildlife habitat, as well as food and shelter in the immediate area. Revegetation of
the disturbed area is proposed with the two attached diverse seed mixtures. All of the species
included in the seed mixes are commonly encountered in Colorado, are palatable for wildlife,
and are proven revegetation species. All of the species included in the seed mixes aze native to
Colorado or naturalized through range or agricultural plantings.
The seed mixes include representatives of cool and warm season species to maximize cover and
seed production throughout the summer months. The seeding rate was determined from the
selected plant species to ensure placement of a minimum of 40 seeds per square foot, consistent
with Natural Resource Conservation Service recommendations for reclamation of disturbed sites.
Seeding will be conducted employing drill or broadcast seeding methods, with seed being
covered using machine methods or raked in by hand. Planting and seeding of vegetation will
occur during the first normal planting season after completion of backfilling and regrading, but
no later than November 15 of the year in which the prior activities are completed. To take
advantage of climatic fluctuations, two seeding windows are proposed, March 15-July 1 and
September 1 to November I5.
Shrub Planting
To promote development of wildlife habitat, minimize erosion along the pond margins
(particularly the east shoreline) and provide additional species diversity, planting of willow
stakes in natural groupings along the pond shoreline is proposed. Coyote willow (Salix exigua)
stakes will be planted to encourage development of willow copses and retard erosion. Willow
stake planting locations will be determined in the field, with each planting comprising from 25 to
50 willow stakes.
Irri ap lion
Irrigation maybe employed during revegetation in areas where fluctuating water levels adjacent
to the pond may cause drought stress to seeded or planted species. The irrigation will be of a
sprinkler irrigation type and will be employed only through the first two growing seasons as
required.
2RR app
CDMG 112
