' Denver Brlck Camparry
Stevens Leasa Clay Mine
Douptes County, Colorado
AEE Project E95.7084
January 8, 1996
Papa 1131
' Consultant: AGRA Earth & Environmental, Inc.
17301 W. Colfax Avenue, Suite 170
Golden, Colorado 80401
Attn: Paul Banks, Senior Project Manager
' (3031 277-9988
5.0 EXTRACTIVE LAND USE MANAGEMENTIOPERATIONAL PLAN NARRATIVE
' The applicant is proposing to mine the site for red clay reserves. Red-colored brick is a major
product of the Denver Brick Company. Availability of the red clays required is limited, as it
' may only occur in occasional lenses within the Dawson Arkose (the major surficial geologic
structure within Douglas County!. The total acreage within the Use by Special Review Permit
boundary is 40 acres, of which approximately 21 acres will be mined. Existing site features
ere shown on the Mine Plan Map.
;' 5.1 Qeneral Description
In order to minimize environmental impacts to wildlife habitat, mining will involve only the
I' north portion (approximately 21 acres) of the 40-acre property (except the access road!. No
~ more than five to ten acres will be disturbed before reclamation commences. Vegetation and
' surface debris will be removed, and then available topsoil will be stripped and stockpiled for
later use in reclamation. Overburden material will then be excavated and stockpiled.
Overburden will subsequently be used for reclamation backfill and subsoil material. Clay will
~~ then be excavated and stockpiled. There will be no clay processing on-site.
Mining is expected to commence in Spring of 1996. As the clay usage will be subject to
market demand for brick products, the life of the mine is expected to be a minimum of ten
years. Average annual production is estimated at approximately 17,500 tons per year.
Stockpiles and equipment will move around the property as the mining advances.
Number of emolovees
It is anticipated that one person will be employed at the site, based on a full-time equivalent
basis.
5.2 Extraction Ooeratlon
~' No blasting will occur during mining operations. Excavation will be accomplished by using a
dozer and scraper. Hours of operation (operation is defined as mining, reclamation, loading
i and hauling) will be 7:00 am to 5:00 pm averaging 80 days per year. Hauling and loading will
' occur an average of 80 days per year and.mining and reclamation an average of 60 days per
.. year.
' Operations will avoid the ephemeral channel and associated vegetation along Mellon Gulch and
will avoid disturbance of the south and western portions of the property, as recommended by
the CDOW.
~1
~A~RA
Earth & Environmental
