• APPLICATION TO REVISE PERMIT CO-007-80 <br />Issued to Atlantic Richfield <br />for its <br />Mt. Gunnison No. 1 Underground Mine <br />Introduction <br />West Elk Coal Company (WECC), a wholly-owned subsidiary of <br />Atlantic Richfield Company and operators of the Mt. Gunnison <br />No. I Underground Mine located near Somerset, Colorado, proposes <br />to revise its permit-to-mine to allow for the temporary storage <br />of less than 50,000 yd3 of material excavated from the site shown <br />on Attachment A for the construction of a second coal storage <br />silo. Construction of this silo was approved as part of CMLRB <br />Permit CO-007-80. <br />As part of the site preparation for the silo, material on th.e <br />north-facing slope immediately south of the present silo will be <br />excavated to bedrock. A roadway retaining wall will be construc- <br />ted. The retaining wall was specifically engineered to ensure <br />the stability of the road. See Attachment B for certification by <br />David Greenwood, Professional Engineer with Michael Baker, Inc., <br />certifying the design of the retaining wall. <br />The excavated material will. be temporarily stockpiled at a site <br />within the Mt. Gunnison 5-year permit area as shown on Attachment <br />C. Since this area is also within Bear Coal Company's current <br />5-year permit area for its now-closed Bear Mines 1 and 2, permis- <br />sion has been obtained from Mr. William A. Bear, President of the <br />Bear Coal Company, allowing WECC to assume responsibility far <br />reclamation of that portion of land to be used for the stockpile, <br />the road and sediment control structures as defined in Attachment <br />D.
