Evaluation of Potential Well Impacts From
The Proposed Nix Property Sand and Gravel Operation
Following public notification of the proposed Nix mining operation, several well owners (some
at distances greater than 600 feet) expressed concern about the operation and its potential effects
on their wells. Several of the owners expressing concern had wells completed in bedrock
aquifers that will be unaffected by the Nix gravel mining operation (i.e., those wells completed
deeper than approximately 65 feet). Table 2 is a list of the concerned well owners including their
well designation on Sheet 1, well depth, well yield, permitted use and distance to the neazest
proposed mining azea.
As a result of discussions with the neighboring landowners, 12 existing irrigation, domestic and
monitoring wells (in addition to the 7 piezometers) were used as observation locations for this
investigation. Collectively, the 19 wells were given designations MWl through MW19, and
their elevations were surveyed relative to the top of the casing and ground surface. These 19
monitoring locations are represented on Sheet 2 (see map pocket).
3.3 Groundwater Level Observations
Groundwater level observations at the 19 monitoring wells were made between August 14 and
September 14, 2001. Table 3 summazizes the available information on these wells and the
observed groundwater levels during this monitoring period. The data obtained from this period
confirmed that groundwater across the property flows in a northwesterly direction towards St.
Vrain Creek. ,This is graphically represented by the groundwater table contows interpreted from
the September 14, 2001 data, as shown on Sheet 3. The groundwater gradient varies from a low
of approximately 0.5 percent beneath the Nix property to approximately 1.5 percent upgradient
of the proposed mining area.
3.4 -Proposed Mining Plan
Several pit configwations have been proposed for the Nix pit. The current plan is shown on
Sheets 2, 3 and 4.
011-074.000 Wright Water Engineers, Inc. Page 4
November 2001
