Benching shall be of sufficient
width to permit operations of placing and compacting equipment.
Each horizontal cu[ shall begin at the intersection of the origi-
nal ground and [he vertical sides of the previous cuts. Material
thus cut out shall be recompacted along with the new embankment
material at the CONTRACTOR'S expense. Place suitable material
from excavation, stockpiles, or borrow [n lines and grades shown.
Construct fill in successive horizontal layers having a compacted
thickness as specified below. CompacC fills at controlled mo.is-
Cure content to specified densities. Accomplish compaction using
equipment suitable and satisfactory for the compaction of the
specific material used.
Do no[ use soft, organic, or frozen materials in fill nor place
fill o or against frozen surfaces. Leave work areas in clean
condition with slopes as required for natural drainage.
In event sufficient suitable materials are no[ available from
excavation or stockpiles, obtain necessary borrow from borrow
areas on-site in locations as specified above.
B. Filling:
Using suitable ma[eri.al, construct fill to lines and grades
shown, except as specified below. Place in layers of compacted
• thickness and density as follows:
S-9
