Chemical Properties and Natural Fertilitv - Normally there are no seriotu chemical limitations to the use
• n( the soils of mapping unit number 6 (or plant growth. There are no harmful salts or sodium. A few of
the soils of this unit are calcareous but free carbonates do not hinder uptake of plant nutrients.
The lighter colored components of Mapping Unit Number 6 have lower than normal fertility levels for the
mine arcs. The components with dark surface horizons appear to be average for the area. Some evidence
of phosphorus deficiency was found in the soil analysis (see Exhibit 26). Supplemen[al fertilization of
disturbed areas should include nitrogen and phosphorus to insure a vigorous growth of vegetation in the
shortest time.
t`4appinC Unit Number X(, -This mapping unit has the same description as mapping unit number 6.
Classification of Itlaior Components - The components listed below comprise the major part of maPPtOS
unit number X6.
A. Typic Cryorthents (Cold Lithosols).
1. Loamy, mixed, (calcareous), shallow.
(Roxal Series)
2. Clayey, montmorillonitic, (calcareous), shallow.
(Series unidentified)
B. Typic Cryoborolls (Chernozemic Lithosol).
]. Loamy, mixed, shallow.
(Bucklon Series)
(Tealson Series)
?. Clayey, montmorillonitic, shallow.
• (Series unidentified)
C. Lithic Cryoborolls (Chernozemic Lithosol).
1. Loamy, mixed.
(Ha}aon Series)
2. Loamy-skeletal, mixed.
(Eyre Series)
D. Argic Lithic Cryoborolls.
1. Loamy, mixed.
(Gilispie Series)
Extent and Maior Areas of Occurrence - Mapping unit number X6 occurs extensively throughout most of
the arcs a: elevations above 7,800 feet. ]t is the cold counterpart of mapping unit number b of lolvcr
clcymions.
Characteristic Tonocraphv -Topography for mapping unit number X6 is the same as that of mapping
unit number 6.
Physical Properties -The soils of mapping unit number X6 have the same physical properties as the soils
in mapping unit number 6.
Chemical Properties and Natural Fertilitv -The soils of mapping unit number X6 have the same
chemical properties and natural fertility description as the soils in mapping unit number 6; however,
laboratory values vary slightly.
• MaPPin,~ Unit Number ]6 - Moderately deep (20 to 40 inches to bedrock) and deep (more than 40
inches to bedrock), light colored, medium to moderately IIne textured (IS to 35 percent clay), well
