They tend to replace soils of unit
number 1 (previously described) in the soil pattern as the soil environment becomes cooler and more
moist.
Characteristic TonoCranhv - T,4apping unit number 6 occurs on moderately to steeply sloping ridge crests,
shoulders, and along the edges of stream valleys where erosion has been active, keeping the regolith thin.
Slopes range from 5 percent to 50 percent or more and soil bodies tend to be long and thin paralleling
drainage channels.
Physical Properties - Mos[ of the soils of this unit are young soils and, with the exception of the surface
horizons, have only very weakly developed natural soil structure. Consequently, the soils of this mapping
unit arc only moderately well adapted to disturbance in the development of new seedbeds. Most of the
soils of this unit are subject to packing if traversed by heasy machinery, or to irreversible puddling if
handled when wet. The fine textured components (those with more than 35 percent clay) are particularly
susceptible to puddling.
In their virgin state, the soils o[ mapping unit number 6 are not very susceptible to accelerated soil erosion
by either wind or water. When cleared or disturbed they are moderately susceptible to both and will
• require erosion control practices.
