due to its proximity to a fault which breaks the bed a
few hundred feet east of the outcrop. The mine has been
worked intermittently in past years and the total output
has been used locally for domestic purposes. It was reported
in 1911 that the mine was to be equipped and operated on
a commercial scale during the winter season. The cutting
off of the coal bed, however, by the fault a few hundred
feet east of the mine opening precludes the possibility
of extensive development in that direction.
Beekly's analysis of the coal from the McCallum mine was:
Air drying loss 5.28
As received:
Moisture 19.28
Volatile Matter 33.58
Fixed Carbon 41.J8
Ash 6.298
Sulphur 0.278
BTU/lb. 9640.
The portal of the McCallum Mine and the several other small
workings along the outcrop of the Sudduth seam on the Bourg property
had caved. Part of the roof of the McCallum Mine had caved forming
a chimney some 20 feet deep and about eight feet across. This
chimney was fenced off and a danger sign was placed cn the fence
to prevent accidents.
J
B-2
