~E ARCHEOLOGY
Two archeological studies of the Bourg property and the haul
road were commissioned. The second of these studies also included
the ranch roads shown in Plate 1 on either side or the proposed
haul road, in case an alternate route for the haul road was necessary.
Both reports, done under the supervision of Professor Joseph J.
Lischka, Department of Anthropology, University of Colorado, are
attached as Appendix C.
The first report concluded, "Considering all of the above
information obtained from the archaeological survey, the Bourg
Coal property and the two access roads studied do not contain
significant cultural resources." The second report suggested
that the ranch road paralleling the proposed haul road on the
northeast not be used as the haul road due to some small stone
circles. It reported also that the field worker recorded the
McCallum Mine, which is located on the Bourg property (Plate 1 ),
in the State Historical Register. This was done to fulfill the
law that requires registering all mines over 50 years old, and
not to suggest that the mine be preserved.
The McCallum Mine was examined by A. L. Beekly and written
up as follows in U.S. Geological Survey Bulletin 596, dated 1915:
McCallum Mine. The McCallum mine is about 5 miles
northeast of Walden, in the NW4, Sec. 18, T9N, which
in this locality strikes N. 55° W. and dips 20° NE.
At the time of the field work on which the present report
is based the mine consisted of a slope driven down the
dip of the coal bed for 50 feet, beyond which it is widened
into a room with a nearly horizontal floor extending about
50 feet farther in the direction of dip. This room is of
irregular shape, 20 to 25 feet wide and about 10 to 12 feet
high, and is crudely timbered. No particular system of
mining had been followed and the mine is in bad shape for
further work. The slope and room were driven in the middle
of the coal bed, which is reported 35 feet thick, so that
the roof and floor are of coal. The exposed portion of
the bed consists of fairly black coal, practically free
of partings but showing considerable fracturing, no doubt
B-1
