Schmieding
Reclamation Specialist
Mined Land Reclamation Division
Colorado Dept. of Natural Resources
723 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street
Denver, Colorado 80203
RE: Coaldale puarrv Your file ~k77-247
Per your request at our 1/17/78 meeting and tour of the mine
site, the following information concerning your comments
on the narrative and data submitted in the Mining Permit
Application.
1) As you may recall from inspection of the sites prepared
for seedling plantings scheduled for April, 1978, slopes
are 2:1 or lower over the greatest part of the area. Slopes
up to 1:1 mentioned in the narrative were pointed out during
the mine site visit to be experimental areas of bench heights
less than 20 feet. Seedling plantings in these areas will give
mine personnel a better idea of planting survival rates on
1:1 slopes in a location of law precipitation, high permeability,
and proven low erosion problem area. Utilization of revegetation
at 1:1 slopes at Coaldale, if successful, could mean substantial
monetary savings in the reclamation cost, while complementing
the natural steep slopes surrounding the affected land and
undisturbed sites in the area. Again, I wish to stress that
our experimentation with L:1 slope revegetation will include
approximately 10% of the seedlings planted in the first few
field seasons.
2), 3), Where benches are utilized for hangingwall control and
waste dumps, 30' widths and heights will be used. Thirty foot
benches are employed on all extraction faces. As pointed
out during your visit, stabilized highwalls up to 200' high and
up to 80% from the horizontal will be utilized in certain areas
of the mine until mining is near completion.
