~Ylinor Revision No. 270 page 4
March l=l, 2000
• Water Supply SYStem
Once the three seals aze completed, MCC will begin pumping water into the mine to flood the
azea and extinguish the combustion. The source of the water will be from ACC's 1.2 million-
gallon water tank that is filled with MCC's water right in the North Fork of the Gunnison River.
A drawing is enclosed which shows the location of the three seals and the "shore line" once the
water is pumped into the combustion area. The maximum volume of water that will be pumped
is approximately 4 million gallons, or 12 acre-feet. It is possible that MCC may pump less
water. A pipeline will be laid from the water tank to the drill holes. A drawing is also enclosed
that shows the location of the pipeline, pumps, and drain locations. All of the pipe and pumps
were flown into the site by helicopter, and crews to lay the pipe will be brought in by snow-cats.
The pipeline will be laid on the surface so there will be very little disturbance in the pipeline
corridor. However, some brush clearing will be necessary. The fast 6,000 feet of pipe will
follow the existing USFS Apache Rocks Road. The drain locations will allow MCC to drain the
pipe to prevent the pipe from freezing when not in use. When the pipeline is no longer needed it
will be removed.
MCC has appreciated DIv1G's cooperation during this emergency. As you know from our
telephone conversations, locating the combustion area and determining how to extinguish the
combustion has been a dynamic process and we discover new information about our siniation
each day. As such, MCC will plan to update this revision periodically as new information is
• obtained and plans to extinguish the combustion are formed and changed.
Please call if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
istine E.
