Water will also be used for concrete production at the concrete batch plant proposed for
the site. It is estimated that 50,000 cubic yards will be produced annually on the site.
An average of 50 gallons per cubic yard is required for concrete hatching which converts
to 7.7 acre-feet annually.
The maximum annual consumptive use of water for the mining operation will occur during
the last phase of mining when the greatest water surface is exposed. The projected
maximum annual total is as follows:
Lake Evaporation (410 ac) 1,771 ac-ft
Wash Pond Evaporation (1.4 ac) 6 ac-ft
Water Retained in Material 24 ac-ft
Dust Control 13 ac-ft
Concrete Production 8 ac-ft
Totel 1,822 ac-ft
Project Water Rights
The net evaporation from the gravel pit lake will require augmentation by a senior water
right. Midwestern Farms owns 1,509 shares of the Buffalo Creek Ditch (aka: Buffalo
Canal). There are a total 4,690.22 shares issued in the ditch company.
The Buffalo Canal water is a senior water right with an adjudication date of July 1, 1895
and an appropriation date of January 29, 1885. The ditch is decreed for 67.5 cubic feet
per second.
The Buffalo Canal is the last water right in Colorado along the Arkansas River that places
a call on the river.
2. Dlvsrslons
An evaluation of the diversions by the Buffalo Canal for the period 1976-1990 show that
the average annual diversion for the ditch is 22,442 acre-feet. Table G-1 lists the annual
diversions as recorded by the State Engineer's Office. The table also lists the annual pro-
rated diversions for the 1509 shares owned by Midwestern Resources. The average
annual diversion for 1509 shares is 7,220 acre-feet.
3. Historic Consumptlve Use
Assuming that 50% of the water diverted in the ditch has been consumed in the farming
operation, the annual consumptive use of the 1509 shares would equal to 3,610 acre-feet.
G-3
