J.E. Stover & Associates, Inc.
Slope Stability Analysis, Road Fill and Portal Fill
Roadside Mine, Cameo, CO
January 26, 2007 Page 3
Mesa Verde Formation as "bedrock," and no failure plains were allowed to pass through the formation.
This limitation on the failure plains shortened the "slip surface" and resulted in a slightly lower factor of
safety (FS) for the man-made fills and in-place native soils, for those trial surfaces that would intersect
the Mesa Verde Formation.
The direct sheaz testing was accomplished using multi-stage testing on single samples, using methods
similar to that described in Gan, Fredlund & Rahardjo, "Determination of the Sheaz Strength Parameters
of an Unsaturated Soil Using the Direct Sheaz Apparatus in The Emergence of Unsaturated Soil
Mechanics," 1999, NRC Research Press, Canada. The Grand Junction Lincoln DeYore. testing DID
NOT utilize the special shear box The lowest normal stress of the strength test tends to "break" the soft
rock cementation (ultimate strength), with subsequent tests tending to measure softened peak and resid-
ual strreugth values.
We hope this letter has provided you with the information required. If questions arise, or if further
information is needed, please feel free to contact Grand Junction Lincoln DeVore at any time.
Respectfully submitted,
GRAND JUNCTION
LINCOLN DeVORE, INC.
30590
:t-~9.~r
by: Edward iGi.
