' INTRODUCTION
A Class II cultural resource inventory of the Jumbo Mountain Tract was conducted by Western
' Cultural Resource Management, Inc. (WCRM) of Boulder, Colorado for WESTEC of Denver,
Colorado. The project is located southeast of Bowie, Colorado and covers both private and
public lands. The public lands, estimated to cover 280 acres, are administered by the Bureau
' of Land Management-Montrose District (Figures 1 and 2). The Jumbo Mountain Tract is an
underground expansion azea for the West Elk Mine operated by the Mountain Coal Company,
a subsidiary of ARCO, Denver, Colorado. Access to the study azea is usually through the
Minnesota Reservoir access to Jumbo Mountain although for this study Mr. Larry Mautz
provided access onto his Chipeta Ranch property off of Colorado State Highway 133.
The purpose of the inventory was to identify, document, and evaluate cultural resources lying
within the Jumbo Mountain Tract. Given the location of the tract on the steep, densely
vegetated north slopes of Jumbo Mountain and the fact that the surface of the tract will not be
' further disturbed, the BLM-Montrose District permitted a Class II inventory which focused on
open azeas and springs areas likely to contain cultural resource sites. Lands containing known
historic resources were also surveyed and inventoried. A total of approximately 100 acres were
inventoried including five Class II sample azeas, ten spring/pond locations, and six historic site
locations. In some cases there was overlap among the various types of surveyed areas. The
legal locations of the Class II study area are listed in Table 1.
Fieldwork was conducted on October 11-15 and November 1, 1993 by Thomas J. Lennon of
WCRM, Inc. Mr. Lennon also served as Principal Investigator. Cultural resource records aze
on file at the Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation, Colorado Historic Society,
Denver. Original field notes aze retained in the files of WCRM, Inc. No artifacts were
collected during the study.

1
r
i~
