• hiANAGEh1ENT SUMMARY
Consolidation Coal Company (ConsolJ proposes to mine coal in the
Danforth Hills, north of Meeker, Colorado. A proposed rail spur (with
two alternative routes) will link the mine with an existing rail net-
work. Intensive investigations for cultural resources were conducted .in
the proposed coal mine areas and along one of the railroad corridors.
Only an inventory.of existing data was performed for the alternative
rail corridor. Within the coal mine areas, some 4400 acres were
surveyed. Some areas of the coal mine were excluded from the field
inspection due to steep slopes. A total of 8 sites and 16 isolated
finds were recorded by the field crew. Two sites, historic Euroamerican
homesteads, are considered significant and eligible for nomination to
National Register of Historic Places. Extensive photodocumentation,
archival research, informant interviews, and testing are recommended if
the sites cannot be avoided. Along the primary rail corridor, 8 sites
and 3 IFs were recorded. Four are significant and eligible for nomina-
tion to the National Register of Historic Places. Limited test excava-
tions are recommended if they cannot be avoided. Within the alternative
rail corridor, 14 sites have been recorded, of which 3 are considered
significant and eligible for nomination to the National Register of
Historic Places. Intensive survey is required if this route is used.
•
•
vii
